James Andrew Barrett is a queer, Brooklyn-based performer, choreographer and teacher. Their artistic approach is most influenced by their time working with director Faye Driscoll and with New Dialect (Nashville, TN), where they worked in collaboration with choreographers Rose Herrera, Yin Yue, Banning Bouldin, Idan Sharabi and Joy Davis. While in New Dialect they had the opportunity to hone their choreographic voice creating multiple works on themself and the company, garnering attention from Nashville Arts Magazine (2018).

James has shared their solo work at Centennial Performing Arts Studios (TN), the Barn at Lee (MA), Green Space (NY), and Pageant (NY). Since they moved to New York City in 2021, James has led workshops in theatrical embodiment practices at Gibney, Triskelion studios and Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation.

James has most recently collaborated on projects with Lauren Edson (LED Boise), Dolly Sfeir, Tristan Koepke, Ariel Lembeck and Ben Green. They have worked with the renowned director and choreographer, Faye Driscoll, originating a new work entitled “Weathering” which premiered at New York Live Arts in April of 2023 and is now touring nationally and internationally.

James has worked independently and through companies as a rehearsal assistant and teaching artist, instructing at various programs including Jazzgoba Dance Academy (Costa Rica), Perry- Mansfield, Tulane University,  and The Juilliard School.
